When should you repair your stucco exterior?
Stucco deterioration and damage are common in our area, and if it isn’t addressed correctly the results can be disastrous to the underlying structure of your home. Thus, you need to repair stucco cracks as soon as possible every time you seen one.

Stucco Wall Repair Case Study
This is a traditional Rio Rancho cement stucco home that had a slight brocade texture. But years of temperature extremes and water intrusion created severely damaged stucco siding. The stucco had completely failed above the latillas on the garden wall. This meant we had to remove all the loose material and dig back the stucco to a point where we reached solid material. The homeowner was very concerned with having the damage professionally corrected before more invasive damage occurred to the underlying structure.
The primary challenges of this project included:
- major cracking throughout the house and garden walls
- failure of the stucco to the point where chunks of the “grey coat” had fallen off the house and the wire mesh was visible
- widespread separation of the color coat from the grey coat due to water absorption and freezing over the years forced the separation.

Stucco Garden Wall (Before)
Only once the bad material was removed could we attach a new chicken wire and apply a new grey coat using Rapid Set. Rapid Set is a cementitious stucco material that does not require curing, allowing the project to be performed in a timely fashion (days, not months) without sacrificing quality.

Then we applied a slight brocade texture over the top of the grey coat to minimize the appearance of textural differences. Finally, it was time for the coating system – it was primed using a masonry primer, followed with a spot prime of elastomeric to specific areas, and finished with a complete elastomeric coat to all surfaces.
Stucco Siding (Before)
The next step was to repair the stucco siding, which was handled a little differently. We can see from the image that the right wall was in bad shape. The right wall had large cracks in it that we repaired using Rapid Set before it was textured to match the general grain of the house (that’s the grey color). This then had Sto (a synthetic stucco) applied to create a brocade texture that matched the raised texture (see the light-colored spots on the stucco).
Stucco Siding (After)
Once the stucco repairs were completed, the project required thoroughly caulking any open seams where the stucco met another surface (door frames, windows, wood trim). We then fully coated the house with a primer; applied a partial coat of elastomeric to the base of the walls and the tops of the parapets, and completed the job with a full coat of the elastomeric to the entire house.
End Result:
Not only was the customer extremely happy with the beautiful and durable finishes on all the surfaces, but they will sleep better knowing their home has been professionally protected from the elements!
